Video Interview Tips

There is a 60% chance that your next interview will be via video. Here we’ve included some tips on how to properly prepare and stage every part of the video interview to give you the best chance possible.

  1. 66% of students and graduates surveyed by Candidate Talent said they felt their interview ‘could’ve gone better’. Video interviews are fast becoming very popular in the hiring process. If the interview is being held remotely outside the potential employer’s office, you should:
    • Find a quiet, private, well-lit place, free from possible interruptions.
    • Make sure your phone is on silent mode so as to fully concentrate on the video interview.
    • Head to and practice your video interviews completely for free.
  2. Test your internet connection. You should:
    • Make sure your internet connection is stable.
    • Confirm that the computer’s audio is working and test your computer’s webcam
    • Close any unnecessary web browser tabs and applications.
  3. Dress well. Just like any interview meeting, how you dress will speak volumes about you. You should:
    • Dress professionally and avoid bright colors as they can reflect unnecessary light.
    • Have a pen, notepad and a copy of your resume with you. You never know when you may need them.
  4. Be aware of your body language. Always try to convey the correct body language in any interview. When it comes to video interviews, smile and nod while listening to show you are engaged. You can also use hand gestures when appropriate. Other than that try to be comfortable, don’t lean too much on your chair and be audible.
